ELECTRICAL CERTIFICATE
What is a CIE?
The Certificado de Instalación Eléctrica, commonly referred to as the CIE or boletín eléctrico, is documentation relating to an electrical installation and its technical characteristics.
Before a certificate can be issued, the installation must be reviewed and the relevant electrical checks and measurements carried out.
If defects or unsuitable parts of the installation are found, electrical work may be required before the certification process can be completed.

Why might you need a boletín eléctrico?
The reason for requesting a CIE depends on the property, the existing documentation and the change being requested.
New Electrical Supply
Certification may be required when registering or commissioning an electrical supply.
Power Increase
A CIE may be requested when increasing the contracted electrical power, depending on the installation and existing documentation.
Renovated Installation
Significant electrical renovation or changes to an installation may involve new electrical documentation.
Requested Documentation
Your electricity supplier, distributor or another party may ask you to provide valid electrical installation documentation.
INSPECTION & TESTING
The installation has to be checked
A CIE is not simply paperwork. The existing electrical installation needs to be reviewed and relevant checks carried out.
Depending on the installation, this can include checking:
- The electrical panel and protective devices
- Circuit breakers and circuit configuration
- RCD protection
- Protective conductors and earthing
- Conductor sizes and circuit protection
- Electrical measurements and test results
- General condition of the installation
EXISTING INSTALLATIONS
What happens if problems are found?
Older installations do not always meet the requirements needed for the requested certification. If problems are identified, I can explain what needs to be corrected and provide a quote for the necessary electrical work.
This might involve relatively small corrections, or in some cases more substantial work such as upgrading protection, circuits or the electrical panel.

Is a CIE the same as a boletín eléctrico?
“Boletín eléctrico” is the commonly used name for the Certificado de Instalación Eléctrica or CIE.
Can you issue a CIE without inspecting the property?
The electrical installation needs to be inspected and the relevant checks carried out. Photos can help with an initial assessment, but they do not replace the required on-site inspection and testing.
What if my electrical installation is old?
An older installation is not automatically unsuitable, but its condition and protection need to be assessed. If corrections are needed, I can explain the required work after the inspection.
Can you carry out the electrical work if something needs changing?
Yes. If the inspection identifies electrical work that needs to be completed before the certification process can continue, I can provide a separate quote for that work.
I need to increase my contracted power. Can you help?
Yes. Send me the current situation and the power you want to request. I can review the installation and determine what electrical checks, documentation or changes may be necessary.
